Bryan Donovan

Background Data File 

Bryan was the son of Terran parents, who struck out for the frontier to get away from the crowds and technology of Terra. He grew up in a relatively low tech colony, helping his father farm. During the Fourth Frontier War,
Bryan was a teenager, and decided to "join the cause" and enlisted in the Imperial Marine Corps.
Bryan's Marine career started off well. He quickly learned the discipline and brotherhood of the Corps, and became proficient with weapons, particularly the Marine Cutlass, in which he's gained an expert rating. The Cutlass is his obsession. He practices every day without fail, never goes anywhere without it, and loves to duel with it.

  After basic training, Bryan was sent to several backwater worlds on police actions and counter-insurrection duties. The leadership on these tours was particularly inept, being mostly young, inexperienced, OTS graduates who often made poor decisions that cost the lives of many of Bryan's friends. In the last year, on such a tour with completely incompetent leadership, Bryan's sergeant, who he idolized, was killed. It was this incident that kept Bryan from re-enlisting, and he has had an intense dislike of Marine officers since. Bryan then enlisted with the IISS and was trained in Starship skills, most particularly Piloting and Engineering. He spent his first term on Detached Duty, scouting out unexplored subsectors toward Aslan territory. His second term was spent doing advanced reconnaissance for the Navy during the Fifth Frontier War.

After mustering out from the Scout Service, Bryan longed for the brotherhood of the Marines, but did not want the strict authority structure, which he believed was often incompetent. He joined Starchaser to regain that teamwork and brotherhood, without having to follow orders from single individuals. His skills fit this organization well, and finally thinks he's found a job that will fulfill him.
